A small Japanese owned and operated sushi place with prices that are aligned with their quality and freshness of their fish. It's really hard to ignore their prices because a sushu combo is literally double (plus a little more) the price of many sushi spots in town. The sashimi is easily comparable to what you will see on Miku's menu.
For anyone who's been to Japan and had raw fish there, you will appreciate this place because it's probably the closest in taste & quality.
The inside, decor isn't very fancy but clean. A few tables that seat approx 15-18 people total.
When I took pics of the individual pieces of sushi, it honestly reminds me of the photos of sushi when I ate at Tokyo's fish market. There is very little wasabi provided on the side because they put some in each piece.
I love that they serve sockeye salmon and their scallop sushi has little to no mayo inside...amazing!
I normally don't order tamago but it was part of the deluxe combo and it tasted unlike any tamago in town.
There are handwritten specials on the wall of their freshest items available but I find some are just too over-priced. $17 for uni sushi seems a bit steep.
This place definitely stands out above the rest. On average, $25 spend per adult...easily! -

Small little shop run by a Japanese family. There are about 4 tables and 6 bar seats in the restaurant. I love sitting by the bar to watch them make the sushi piece by piece. We ordered Deluxe Nigiri Combo ($27) which included 9 pieces of Nigiri and 1 roll of Red Tuna Maki. I also added a few other nigiri pieces and the fish is very fresh, rice proportion and flavors are balanced. We also added Chawanmushi ($7) which is Japanese steamed egg. It's served in a small cup which is expensive but it's so umami and full of dashi flavors. They are located on Victoria Drive beside London Drugs Plaza. There are lots of free parking on the street. Like everyone else has said, I consider the pricing at Shima-Ya to be expensive too (Salmon is $3, Amaebi is $5). But there aren't many great sushi restaurants in this area, so I would for sure come eat here again when I don't want to drive far.
Taste: 4/5 Service: 5/5 Value: 3/5 -

I came to this place back in 2014 or 2015? and it was a disaster!
The service back then was fine but the food was just awful.
I visited this place again against my Better judgement, and it was better than the what i tasted in 2014.
The food tasted much better than what I remembered.
They must have hired a 5 year old child as their chef back in those days.
Keep it up shiyama and you won't be on most people's joke list -

Ok. Shhh!!!! I want to keep this to myself. This place is the real deal. No deep fryer. Fresh sushi - kinda important!! they are closed on Tuesdays but are open every other day. They are thorough with your orders and quick to serve. The staff is friendly and prices though not cheap they are reasonable. Check out there version of the dynamite roll. Sockeye only - yummy!!
